ABOUT BLACKSLADE MANOR

Ancient and remote with glorious views, a comfortable house that sleeps 14 – and toddlers too. Visit the beaches, hike from the door…

It's the sort of place where you long to pull on your boots or jump on a horse and head for the horizon. This historic 400 year old Manor House, forms part of the 6 Manors of Widecombe. This important Manor has been in existence since early medieval times. It is situated half way up the hill in an isolated and quiet position, yet is within easy reach of local amenities. The views across Dartmoor and Widecombe are among the best in Devon. The property is set within its own grounds of about 30 acres and has direct access to the moor, some of which belongs to the property.

There are seven main bedrooms (four with doubles, 3 with twins), two storeys and an attic, linked by a medieval stone stair. There are also 2 further small bedrooms which can either be used for babies or young children on fold out beds. Note the wonderful granite flags as you enter the hall, and, through the window ahead, your first glimpse of the moor. In two sitting rooms cosy with wood-burners and TV's with Sky – and a third for children – are oatmeal walls and comfy sofas. There's a kitchen for cooks (an Aga and a separate hob), a lovely long oak table that seats 18, and a sun room with views you'll never want to leave. There is also a utility room and boot room.

Outside, lawns for children to tumble on, paddocks all around, and a table and chairs for the setting sun. After a day fixing tees to greens (golf is close) or building castles in the sand, how gratifying to come home to fresh flowers, crisp linen and fluffy white towels. What's more, Widecombe, home to the Rugglestone Inn, is a ten-minute walk downhill – a babbling brook, beer from the cask and chips to die for.

Dogs are welcome as long as they are dried off before entering the main house (an extra charge is payable for dogs).
